The Ultimate in Biohacking

We live our lives through our nervous system and today we are all subjected to constant, chronic, low levels of physical, chemical, emotional and electromagnetic stress which causes damage, degeneration and disease. This has propelled us into the early stages of the worst health epidemic of all time: The Neurologic Epidemic!

The Need For Biohacking

Constant, Chronic, Low Levels of Stress Have Been Linked To: anxiety, depression, digestive problems, memory loss, insomnia, hypertension, heart disease, strokes, cancer, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, colds, flu, accelerated aging, allergies, chronic fatigue, infertility, impotence, asthma, hormonal issues, skin conditions, hair loss, muscle spasms, and diabetes, to name just a few conditions.

In addition, ever growing lists of people are now suffering from Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Autism, insomnia, Lupus, MS, acid reflux, IBS, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, migraines, and the list goes on and on.

I am convinced that whoever conquers and neutralizes stress effectively and naturally will own the future of healthcare.  That is why I am such a big fan of biohacking. Dave Asprey, the most famous of all biohackers, describes it as the art and science of changing our internal and external environment to optimize our own biology.

One hundred years of medical research tells us that an imbalance between your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system is the cause of all disease both physical and mental.

In the 1920’s, Dr. Walter Cannon, a world-renowned physiologist, professor and chairman of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School, coined the term, “fight or flight” and popularized the term homeostasis. Cannon was one of the first to study the long-lasting effects of stress on the brain and body and felt that chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system was the cause of all disease.

In the 1950’s, Hans Selye, considered the “Father of Stress Research” said, “Humans suffer from chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system.” Just two decades later in the 1970’s, Dr. Herbert Benson, a professor at Harvard and a pioneer in Mind-Body Medicine, developed the “Relaxation Response” to help us neutralize chronic sympathetic stress, the root of all disease.

Your sympathetics are for survival, while your parasympathetics are for healing. Ideally, you should be surviving and healing at the same time. The challenge is that when you are chronically in a state of sympathetic dominance, your ability to heal, grow, learn, love, and flourish is greatly reduced. Stress keeps you trapped in survival and functionally disconnected from healing.

Chiropractic Care

This brings us back to the ultimate in biohacking, because Doctors of Chiropractic– especially those that are trained in and who practice Brain-Based Chiropractic– recognize that chiropractic has been the most important and most consistent biohacking healthcare model for the last 125 years.

Proper chiropractic adjustments neutralize the stress response and stimulate the relaxation response necessary for healing. Brain-based adjustments normalize and maximize brain function. Chiropractic care restores the brain and the body back to a state of balance, harmony and homeostasis, and optimizes brain and body biology and function. The ultimate biohack!

Chiropractic care given in a neurologically focused way creates a functional reorganization in the brain and makes the connection between cells more robust, while interrupting current inappropriate neurological brain wave patterns.  Chiropractic care improves cortical function and balance, risk evaluation, language skills, motivation, thinking, memory and quality of life; while reducing our stress level, inflammation, and pain.

Today’s Doctor of Chiropractic recognizes that the spine is the best reflection of how the brain is functioning, and the best gateway to altering and improving brain function.  In 1927, Dr. Ralph Stevenson authored one of the most widely read chiropractic books in the profession.  This book, entitled “The Chiropractic Textbook,” is included in most curriculums for chiropractors around the world.  In this landmark book, here is what Dr. Stevenson had to say about chiropractic and brain function:

“In the normal complete cycle, the cause is in the brain and is innate intelligence. I think we confuse our explanation of what we do with why we do it. We do an adjustment using the nerve rich joints of the spine as our window to restoring balance within the brain where the subluxation began.”

In 1981, Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Roger Sperry said that “The spine is the motor that drives the brain.” According to his research, “90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine.”

The leading chiropractic researcher in the world today is Dr. Heidi Haavik.  She has published numerous peer reviewed research articles on the benefits of chiropractic care.  Dr. Haavik states, “When we adjust a subluxation, we don’t just relieve pressure off that particular nerve root – we change the master control system of the body. We change the brain!”

The miracles that chiropractic is famous for are a direct result of the specific adjustment which resets, rebalances and re-establishes normal brain function…the ultimate biohack for sure.  We primarily stimulate and influence our parasympathetic nervous system when we adjust the cranial bones, atlas, axis and sacrum. Our chiropractic adjustive history has primarily focused on the significance of adjusting these two extremes of the cranial-spinal column.

Your Vagal tone is a key indicator of the health of your parasympathetic nervous system. Vagal tone reflects the strength of your immune system, controls digestion, influences inflammation and forecasts your likelihood of heart disease or surviving a catastrophic health event. It is also responsible for the relaxation response.

This is why a brain-based Doctor of Chiropractic monitors and manages autonomic nervous system function with heart rate variability.  HRV has been the gold standard for over fifty years in autonomic assessment and is one of the reasons we routinely implement technology like BrainTap to normalize brain wave patterns and work in coordination with regular chiropractic care to produce the best possible clinical neurological outcomes.

Constant, chronic low levels of physical, chemical, and emotional stress have created the worst health epidemic in human history.  This has created the most important advantage that the chiropractic and wellness professions have ever had and this is why chiropractic care is considered the ultimate biohack.

The primary purpose of the adjustment is to down regulate the sympathetics (survival nervous system), up regulate the parasympathetics (healing nervous system), improve Vagal tone, and relax the Dura mater so that we can fulfill our ONE purpose and ONE objective of helping as many people as possible to have Optimal  Neurological  Expression.
