In a recent study it was discovered that lack of exercise is second only to smoking as a risk factor for premature death. Physical activity is quickly becoming one of the best methods to reduce many common ailments from psychiatric disorders and heart disease to diabetes and cancer. And not exercising could end up costing you more than just your health!
A recent study looking at data from 1 million people worldwide found that a lack of physical activity had a global price tag of $67.5 billion (yes, billion!) in 2013–and those numbers are expected to increase. Of this amount, $32.2 billion was paid by the public sector, $12.9 billion by the private sector and $9.7 billion by individual households–that means directly out of your pocketbook or wallet! According to their findings, one hour of daily exercise could eliminate a majority of these expenses.
Even if your eating habits are on point, you still need to be active and exercise on a daily basis to remain healthy and increase longevity. That’s one of the reasons being more active has come to the forefront in recent years with the NFL’s Play 60 initiative and the First Lady’s Let’s Move! Campaign.
Another study of 661,000 adults revealed there is an optimal zone in which exercise creates the greatest benefit for you. This study confirmed that those who don’t exercise at all had the highest rates of premature death. In fact, inactivity leads to 5 million deaths per year! This study also concluded that the optimal range of exercise is 60 minutes per day, using increasing intensity throughout the exercise.
